All Dressed Up and Everywhere To Go
It always feels like there’s so much to do once springtime rolls around. It’s not that daunting, overwhelming, too-much-to-do-what-am-I-going-to-do feeling, it’s more like that yay-there’s-too-much-to-do kinda feeling. It’s partly because there’s been so much you haven’t been able to do all winter that it’s like a total release of bottle necked plans. That release is what makes spring so liberating. It’s like no traffic and all green lights ahead. These are the songs you play on that utopian roadway. This mix is all sunny-fresh songs from 2013 with no braking necessary. So get going, I know you have a million places to be, just enjoy the drive.

Track List:
1. Step / Vampire Weekend 4:00

2. Entertainment / Phoenix 3:32
3. Angel, Please / Ra Ra Riot 2:20
4. Trojans / Atlas Genius 3:30

Some people say they’d prefer to have one best friend then a whole mess of “good friends”. Just one person who have a blast with and can rely on to hang all the emotional support you need instead of spreading that out over a bunch of people. In this thinking, if friends equal albums (f=a), I didn’t really have a best friend this year. No offense to Frank Ocean but he didn’t really get the number one spot on my list, I mean, he’s on the top spot and his album is great, a classic even, but I didn’t fall head over heels in love with any singular album this year. My personal equation for album assessment is something like personal taste + cultural significance + overall ascetic value (pt+cs+a=x). Frank had the best score with those qualifications yet it still didn’t take over my own zeitgeist the way a top album usually does for me (x). Now, If I sound down on the albums of 2012, I’m not at all. As usual it was difficult to cut down the list to even fifty albums and even more so this year, the lower ranked albums are stronger than lower ranked albums of year’s past. It was just a totally well rounded gang of albums. There was a deep wealth of varied genres, exciting emerging artists and old favorites delivering new gems. Yet there just wasn’t that one album that said: Hello, I am your 2012. Hopefully I’ll meet this album again next year, but until then I have these fifty albums in my life to challenge me, inspire me and get me going. So is one best friend more valuable than a bunch of pals? I guess it just depends on the year.

Dec 22

“Old Long Since” is the literal English translation of the late 18th century Scottish poem “Auld Lang Syne”. Like most of the season’s traditions, singing this music-set-poem at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve is a multi-generational old ritual. Just think about all the people, all over the world, for centuries who have marked the end of the year with the same old song. That tradition and others like it is what makes holiday music so special. The music becomes soaked in the memories of the songs sung. It’s exciting every year to hear an artist’s new interpretation of an old tune or what new song they have to offer to the already overflowing holiday music cannon. Year after year, by continually covering these traditional Christmas songs and also writing new ones, artists are keeping alive the traditions of the holiday season through the universal langue of music. So next time you roll your eyes over the millionth “Jingle Bells” rendition, keep in mind that it’s not just someone’s cover of an overly covered song, it’s someone’s memory of a personal holiday moment. More loosely, “Old Long Since” can be read as “For sake of old times”. I hope this collection of songs soaks up some of the happy moments of this Christmas and brings you back to the happy ones of the past. For auld lang syne.
Tracks:
1. Auld Lang Syne / Andrew Bird 4:28
2. We Need A Little Christmas / Sufjan Stevens 1:56
